North Winds Clip Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau for Upcoming Swell
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 17 January, 2013 : - - Sustained northerly winds wreak havoc with big wave winter surf on the North Shore of Oahu, and for that reason organizers of the Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau big wave invitational have decided upon a NO GO for January 18 & 19.
"The swell is a little too west and the winds dead north for much of this swell, so it's a NO GO," said Contest Director George Downing. "But it looks like there's plenty of activity filling in behind this system so we will continue to monitor each swell that develops."
The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau has a 3-month holding period of December 1, 2012, through February 28, 2013. Six weeks remain for this, the 28th anniversary of "The Eddie".
About Eddie Aikau: Just 31 years of age when he was lost at sea during an ill-fated voyage of Hawaii’s Hokule’a double-hull sailing canoe in 1978, Aikau was a young man at the height of a career equally dedicated to big-wave riding and lifeguarding at historic Waimea Bay. Filled with a pure passion to ride giant surf, take care of his fellow man, and uphold his Hawaiian culture and family values, Aikau became the benchmark by which all big wave riders are measured.
