Former world champ joins coaching team at Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 November, 2012 : - - Former World Champion Chelsea Hedges has joined the coaching team at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre (HPC). Hedges, who won the world title in 2005, will support Surfing Australia National Coaching Director Martin Dunn and Surfing Australia Sport Science Manager Dr Jeremy Sheppard in assisting athletes selected as part of Surfing Australia’s High Performance Scholarship Program.
The aim of the program is to identify and develop the most promising young surfers in the country and provide them with the physical, technical and tactical skills to compete on the world stage. “Obviously we are very pleased Chelsea has joined our elite surfing program,” Martin Dunn said. “Chelsea has a wealth of knowledge and an understanding of what it takes to become a world champion and with the aim of the scholarship being for us to help athletes achieve this goal, she is a perfect fit.”
Hedges made her debut on the Association of Surfing Professional’s World Championship Tour in 2002 finishing eighth and climbed the rankings each year finishing fourth and third in the following two years before winning the World Title in 2005. She has had coaching roles at previous HPC camps, but her new role means she’ll be working directly with the elite athletes in the scholarship program for the first time.
“It will certainly be a different type of role from working in the other camps as I’ll be working a lot closer with the elite athletes on an ongoing basis," Hedges said. “I’ll be able to use my personal experience from being on the WCT for so many years and be able to pass on what I learnt and help them develop and choose the best strategies and approach to their careers.”
